Dracut Officers Union Highlights Growing Retention Challenges Following Latest Departure
May 13, 2026

The New England Police Benevolent Association and the Dracut Police Department Patrolman’s Union are recognizing the service and dedication of Officer Steere as he departs the Dracut Police Department to continue his law enforcement career with another local agency.
Officer Steere’s departure marks the latest in a series of experienced officers leaving the department over the past year. K9 Officer Coleman, Officer Ludwig, Officer Mahoney, and Officer Ngeth have also transitioned to other departments, taking with them years of knowledge, training, and frontline experience.
While union leadership expressed support and appreciation for Officer Steere’s continued service in law enforcement, they also emphasized the broader concerns these departures represent for the future of officer retention within the department.
“Officer Steere has been a valued member of the Dracut Police Department, and we wish him nothing but success in this next chapter of his career,” said the Dracut Police Department Patrolman’s Union. “At the same time, these continued departures underscore the very real challenges departments are facing when it comes to retaining experienced officers in today’s policing environment.”
The union noted that retaining veteran officers has become increasingly difficult for many law enforcement agencies across New England as departments compete for qualified personnel amid staffing shortages, increased professional demands, and evolving workplace pressures.
Despite the ongoing turnover, union officials stressed that Dracut officers remain fully committed to serving the community with professionalism and dedication.
“Our members continue to show up every day committed to protecting and serving the residents of Dracut,” the union said. “They remain hopeful that meaningful changes can be made to strengthen recruitment and retention efforts so departments can maintain the staffing stability and experience levels our communities deserve.”
The New England Police Benevolent Association continues to advocate for policies, resources, and workplace conditions that support the recruitment, retention, and long-term well-being of law enforcement professionals throughout New England.
