Legal Defense Fund

The New England Police Benevolent Association (NEPBA) provides its members with legal resources through both organizational legal counsel and access to individual legal defense options. The information below is intended to clarify these roles and explain NEPBA’s partnership with the Massachusetts Police Association (MPA) and its MPA Legal Defense Fund (LDF).

About the MPA Legal Defense Fund

The MPA Legal Defense Fund has been providing legal defense services to law enforcement officers since 1974. The program offers members access to attorneys who represent officers in a wide range of proceedings, including:

  • Federal and state courts
  • Administrative and regulatory proceedings
  • Internal affairs and professional standards investigations
  • Civil service and retirement-related matters
  • Arbitration and disciplinary hearings

The program emphasizes early access to legal counsel, including the ability for officers to consult with an attorney regarding reports or developing situations.

Membership and Enrollment

Participation in the MPA Legal Defense Fund is not included with NEPBA membership and requires separate enrollment. The partnership allows NEPBA members to directly access information about the Legal Defense Fund and determine whether enrollment is appropriate for their individual needs.

Purpose of the Partnership

This partnership is intended to clarify and expand the legal resources available to NEPBA members by distinguishing between:

  • Legal counsel representing the Association, and
  • Legal defense options available to individual officers.
