NEPBA RESPONSE TO NEW POLICE REFORM BILL

NEPBA RESPONSE TO NEW POLICE REFORM BILL

The New England Police Association, the largest law enforcement labor union in the Commonwealth, has been in the forefront to bring about significant change to policing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Our organization has worked independently and collectively with other police unions, as well as with the legislative leadership and Governor Baker’s office in order to bring about significant and resounding change to all law enforcement officers in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. However, this “feel good” legislation does nothing to ensure that both black and Latino members of our communities are treated with respect and dignity.

In fact, this legislation does nothing to protect those of ethnic diversity nor does it include input by organizations that represent the rank and file of law enforcement. This legislation, which proposes a new nine (9) member commission is nothing more than a political dumping ground filled with political patronage and doesn’t address the real problems, which include education, diversity training, public trust, as well as officer safety.

As we have continuously stated, Massachusetts is not Minnesota and we have the best trained and most highly educated members of law enforcement in the country. The tragic death of George Floyd and the video associated with his cry for help is not a act that could be condoned, nor one that should be overlooked. Yet, Minnesota immediately filed meaningful legislation as a result of this egregious act, which not only addresses the concerns stated above, but it also addresses the important issues by the black and Latino communities of Minnesota – something this legislation filed by the Massachusetts State Legislature does not.

We encourage all our members to contact their state representatives and State Senator and ask that they vote NO on this flawed legislation.
