NEPBA LOCAL 120 ASKING FOR DONATIONS TO HELP WOUNDED OFFICER

On January 20th at about 8:20 p.m., Wilbraham Police Officers responded to a residence on Old Carriage Drive after receiving word that a resident was threatening others inside the home. Upon arrival, Wilbraham police, outside of the residence, exchanged gunfire with a 53-year-old male, later identified as Michael Ortega, who was inside the home.

A 29-year-old Wilbraham police officer suffered a gunshot wound and was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. Officials said the injured officer was in stable condition as of Sunday evening. The Wilbraham Police Department has not released the name of the officer or further details regarding injuries. It is anticipated that the officer will require surgeries and have a long road to recovery.

Residents of the home escaped to the roof, and were safely assisted down by the police department. With drone assistance, Ortega was found with gunshot wounds in the home, and is in stable condition. Ortega has been booked on charges of assault with intent to murder and assault with a dangerous weapon.

The Greg Hill Foundation will match up to $5,000 and cover all credit card transaction fees.
