A Massachusetts police sergeant attempting to cross train tracks in Abington, Massachusetts, on Sunday night was struck and killed by a Commuter Rail train, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office said.
At approximately 8 p.m. Sunday, MBTA police said it received an emergency dispatch from a commuter rail train advising of a pedestrian strike at the Birch Street railroad crossing east of the intersection of North Avenue and Railroad Street in Abington.
The victim, later identified as 56-year-old Scott Sherman, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing by the Abington Police Department, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Police and Massachusetts State Police.
Sherman joined the Randolph Police Department in 2002 and was promoted to sergeant in 2022.
“Scott was very funny, extremely intelligent, and well-respected. His compassion, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to public service made a lasting impact on all who had the privilege to know and work alongside him,” Randolph Police Chief Anthony Marag said.
Investigators said no mechanical faults were noted on the train by MBTA operators, and the train was traveling below the 70-mph speed limit at the time of the incident.
