NEPBA Statement | Worcester City Councilor Charged with Assault on Police

The New England Police Benevolent Association (NEPBA) stands firmly with the officers of the Worcester Police Department following the troubling incident on May 8, 2025, during which a member of the Worcester City Council has now been formally charged with assault and battery on a police officer and interfering with police operations.

No police officer, regardless of the circumstances, should ever be subjected to physical assault while performing their sworn duty to maintain public safety and order. It is deeply concerning that an elected official, entrusted with upholding the law, stands accused of actions that undermine the very principles of public service and respect for law enforcement.

We commend the professionalism and composure of the Worcester police officers who acted with integrity and restraint under difficult conditions. Their dedication to ensuring the safety of the community, even while facing hostility, reflects the highest standards of the policing profession.

“Assaulting a police officer is never acceptable, and it’s even more reprehensible when committed by an elected official,” said Tom Turco, NEPBA Executive Director. “Our Worcester officers upheld their duty with professionalism and integrity, and they deserve nothing less than full support and accountability for the abhorrent actions taken against them.”

As this matter moves forward through the legal process, NEPBA calls for a full and transparent accounting. Public trust demands accountability, not just from law enforcement but from all who serve in positions of authority. No badge should ever be a target, and no officer should have to fear assault while simply doing their job.
