A New Chapter for Lawrence: Chief Aguiler Takes the Helm

Chief Maurice Aguiler, Lawrence Police Department

Lawrence, MA — A proud moment unfolded this week as Chief Maurice Aguiler was officially sworn in as the new Chief of the Lawrence Police Department, a milestone that signals a bright future for the city and its residents.

The New England Police Benevolent Association (NEPBA) joins the Lawrence community in celebrating Chief Aguiler’s well-earned appointment. With decades of dedicated service to the city he calls home, Chief Aguiler brings a powerful combination of leadership, experience, and heart to his new role.

Before assuming the department’s top position, Chief Aguiler served with distinction on the Executive Board of the Lawrence Police Superior Officers Association, NEPBA Local 145. His leadership within the union reflected a deep commitment to both his fellow officers and the community they protect, advocating tirelessly for fairness, professionalism, and progress within the department.

NEPBA President Chris Ryan praised Aguiler’s appointment, calling it “a testament to what dedication, perseverance, and a true commitment to community can achieve.”

“Chief Aguiler exemplifies the highest ideals of law enforcement,” Ryan said. “His career has been built on integrity, resilience, and an unwavering belief in the power of positive policing. We are proud to stand alongside him as he leads the department into its next chapter.”

Chief Aguiler’s roots in Lawrence run deep. Having served in nearly every capacity within the department, from patrol officer to captain, he understands the unique fabric of the community. His approach emphasizes transparency, collaboration, and building bridges between law enforcement and residents. These values, long championed by the NEPBA, promise to strengthen the bond between the department and the people it serves.

Sgt. Mike Simard, President of the Lawrence Police Superior Officers Union NEPBA Local #145, added:

“On behalf of the Superior Officers Union NEPBA Local #145, we are very relieved that one of our members was chosen to be our next permanent police chief. Chief Aguiler is very qualified to lead this department and he brings a wealth of institutional knowledge to the position. His knowledge and experience will only help this department move forward and give this department the best chance at success. We pledge our full support to Chief Aguiler and wish him the best as our new police chief.”

Det. Paul MacMillan, President of the Lawrence Police Patrolmen Association NEPBA Local #125, added:

I’ve known Chief Aguiler since we both began our careers at LPD over 20 years ago.  We worked patrol together and then were partners in detectives.  I know the drive he has and his vision for the department.  He will lead LPD to make Lawrence a safer and more vibrant city.

As Lawrence continues to grow and evolve, the NEPBA is confident that under Chief Aguiler’s leadership, the police department will thrive. His vision for the future is clear: a department rooted in trust, respect, and service, ensuring that every resident feels safe and valued.

The NEPBA congratulates Chief Aguiler on this well-deserved honor and looks forward to working together to continue advancing excellence in law enforcement across the Merrimack Valley.
