NEW HAMPSHIRE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS ATTEMPTS TO BANKRUPT OFFICERS

The New Hampshire Department of Corrections Commissioner William Wrenn, who is also a former Chief of Police in Hampton, New Hampshire and is also well known for his Anti-Union reputation, is attempting to bankrupt two NH DOC Officers by placing them on an unpaid suspension, and cancelling their health care.  The officers remain suspended while the unsupported allegations of alleged misconduct are being investigated.

New England Executive Director Jerry Flynn stated, “NO law enforcement officer should be subjected to financial ruin because of unsubstantiated allegations against them.  Every member of this union should be protected by the same words that have determined guilt or innocence in the United States Constitution – INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY!”

Officer Jeffery Bettez – Has been on unpaid suspension since January 6, 2010, he is an 11 year veteran of the NH DOC who at the time of his suspension was working in the Segregation Unit at the New Hampshire Prison for men.  The Segregation Unit at the Concord Prison is where New Hampshire’s most assaultive and dangerous inmates are housed. Officer Bettez has been accused of assault by an inmate who has a long prior history of assaulting officers and fabricating charges against staff.  Despite eyewitness staff accounts that Officer Bettez was coming to the aid of his partner who was in the process of being assaulted by the accusing inmate, Commissioner Wrenn choose to believe the convicted felon and suspended Officer Bettez without pay then cancelled his health Insurance. NEPBA believes that Commissioner Wrenn is purposely delaying the investigation with the intention of forcing Officer Better to resign or become bankrupt.

Officer Bettez who has a wife and four (4) sons is currently facing bankruptcy; additionally his home is in pre-foreclosure status.

NEPBA Local 250 President Mark Jordan who is an 18 year veteran of the NH DOC, was assaulted after completing his shift at the New Hampshire Prison for men in Concord New Hampshire.  As Officer Jordan walked to his vehicle he exchanged words with a superior officer who was also leaving work after completing his shift. As the superior officer reached his vehicle he became enraged, threw down his coat and hat and then charged Officer Jordan who was standing 40 to 50 yards away.  When he reached Jordan he assaulted him but was quickly restrained by other officers who witnessed the entire incident.  Despite four (4) eyewitnesses stating that the superior officer was the aggressor and that he assaulted Officer Jordan, Commissioner Wrenn has suspended Jordan without pay while allowing the superior officer to return to work.

Shortly before being suspended without pay and having his health care terminated Officer Jordan had filed large number grievances against Commissioner Wrenn. Jordan has also met with the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office to report what he views as corruption within the New Hampshire Department of Correction.

Officer Jordan is married with one (1) daughter and experiencing a financial hardship due to the lengthy suspension.
